Becoming an Everyday Disciple
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, the concept of discipleship can sometimes feel distant—reserved for the “super-spiritual” or those in full-time ministry. Yet, the call to be a disciple of Jesus is an invitation extended to each of us, regardless of background, status, or circumstance. It’s a call to live intentionally, follow Jesus closely, and allow His teachings to transform every aspect of our lives.
The Call to Follow
In John 1:43–51, we read about Jesus calling Philip and Nathanael. Philip’s immediate response was to share the good news with Nathanael—showing that discipleship begins with a personal encounter with Jesus and naturally extends to sharing that encounter with others.
This is the essence of being an everyday disciple: responding to Jesus’ call and inviting others to experience His love.
Known and Loved
One of the most profound aspects of Jesus’ call is that He knows us completely. Just as He saw Nathanael under the fig tree, He sees us in our moments of doubt, fear, and questioning. And yet, He calls us—not because of our qualifications, but because of His love and grace.
This truth should fill us with confidence and peace: we are fully known and fully loved by our Savior.
The Journey of Discipleship
Discipleship is not a one-time event—it’s a lifelong journey. When Jesus called Peter and Andrew in Matthew 4:18–22, they left their nets immediately. That act of leaving behind their old lives symbolizes the transformation that occurs when we choose to follow Jesus.
It requires letting go of the past and embracing the new life He offers—a life marked by growth, learning, and deepening relationship with Him.
Sharing the Good News
As disciples, we are called to be messengers of hope. Romans 10:14–15 reminds us of the importance of sharing the gospel. Our lives should be a testament to the transformative power of Jesus’ love.
Whether through words or actions, we have the opportunity to reflect His grace and truth to those around us.
Living as the 13th Disciple
The idea of being the “13th disciple” is a powerful reminder that we are part of a legacy—a continuation of those who have followed Jesus before us. In John 8:31–32, Jesus calls us to remain faithful to His teachings and to let His truth set us free.
Being the 13th disciple means living out our faith daily, growing in our understanding of Jesus, and remaining committed to His Word.
Conclusion: A Journey of Transformation
Being an everyday disciple is about embracing the call to follow Jesus in every aspect of life. It’s about knowing that we are seen, known, and loved—and responding to that love by sharing it with others.
It’s a journey of transformation, growth, and purpose. As we walk this path, may we be encouraged by the knowledge that we are part of a greater story—a lineage of disciples who have answered the call to follow Jesus.
